In an address from the Oval Office on Sunday, President Biden urged Americans to “lower the temperature in our politics” after shots were fired at the stage during former president Donald Trump’s rally on Saturday. Disagreement is inevitable in American democracy. It’s part of human nature,Biden said. But politics must never be a literal battlefield. And, God forbid, a killing field.

Here's what to know:

An FBI official said the investigation into the gunman has not yet turned up any mental health issues, threatening posts or other motives, but cautioned it was still early. The bureau identified the shooter, who is dead, as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pa.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) identified the person killed at the rally as Corey Comperatore, 50, saying he died “protecting his family.” Two other rally attendees were critically injured. The state police identified them as David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, Pa.; and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township, Pa.

After Trump was evaluated at a medical facility in Pennsylvania, he flew to New Jersey late Saturday, where he was seen exiting a plane at Newark Liberty International Airport around midnight.
